It is said that only through the trials and tribulations of turmoil do the doors of destiny open. A series of political blunders led to the death of culture in Sydney, gone was the midnight pulse that kept the city living and breathing. Rising from the ashes of this stoney rubble, a dark figure emerged, doused in eyeliner, smeared in lipstick, Johnny Hunter was born.
Kicking and screaming in every corner of Sydney's underground. Johnny Hunter haunted pubs with their obscure cabaret, blistering post punk riffs and howling bullish poetry. Gushing with the glamour and bravado of the likes of Morrissey and Bowie whilst bleeding the torment of Joy Division and The Cure, The Johnny Hunter experience caught like wildfire, onlookers became followers and followers became fanatics giving the band its cult status in Sydney.
The band has since sold out rooms across the East Coast of Australia. Was voted best on ground at Big Sound by Double J and supported the likes of Jack White and The Saboteurs, The Psychedelic Furs, Kirin J Callinan, City Calmdown, Press Club, Polish Club and Joyride as well as playing festivals such as Yours & Owls, Bad Friday, Festival of the Sun, Mountain Sounds and Secret Garden (where they famously left the PA in flames).
2020 Further cemented the band's rise with their beautifully melancholic debut EP Early Trauma, gaining critical praise and airplay around the country. Released during the 2020 pandemic the band were unable to tour but still signed to Cooking Vinyl Australia before any representatives had been given the chance to see a live show.
'Want' The debut album for Johnny Hunter produced by Jack Moffit (The Preatures) and mixed by the legendary Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) is our hero’s journey of self- actualisation in a world spinning off its axis.
Dripping in trademark drama and surrounded by furious instrumental, the album consists of songs new and old, retellings of personal and shared experiences in the pursuit of life. Johnny Hunter hang themselves out to dry in public displays of utter lyrical honesty whilst paying homage to the sounds of a past life that shaped the band into the one that audiences hear today.
